Pixelmator by Pixelmator Team
Pixelmator is the latest photo editor for iOS, offering what could very well be the ideal iPhoto replacement. Pixelmator, originally designed for the Mac, offers some of the same advanced features, but specifically designed for a tablet interface. The most noticeable features of Pixelmator include the use of the drop down inspector window (similar to Apple’s iWork applications) for project and tool adjustments, including the ability to add and control images, text, and various vector graphics. Unlike most photo editors, Pixelmator offers plenty of paint brush options, distinguishing the app as both an editor and creation tool. The app also includes other features that are unique to the iOS experience, including the ability to import images into collages, frames, cards, posters, and several photographic effects. The app syncs with iCloud and makes use of the “hand-off” feature when switching to a Mac. Check out our review on YouTube. Note: Pixelmator Pro, the latest version of the desktop editor, does not sync with Pixelmator for the iPad.

Photos by Apple
Apple released some major changes to iPhoto during the release of iOS 7 in the fall of 2013. Many of the same features are still available, but Apple redesigned the app to remove the pictorial embellishments, keeping the app simple and flat in design, with a more intuitive user interface. iPhoto for iOS comes with Smart Browsing, multi-touch editing, brushes, and dazzling effects. With your photos, you can create professional quality photo books, web journals, photo prints, and interactive slideshows via iCloud.
With the release of iOS 8, Apple discontinued iPhoto, while creating a universal Photos app for both the Mac and iOS. While Apple removed the photo editing features for the iOS app (not the desktop), the company introduced third-party integration directly into the photo library. Third applications like PicsArt can now be accessed right from the photos library. This feature continues to be available today.

Leonardo by Pankaj Goswami
Leonardo is an application for the iPhone and iPad that can be classified as an app for power users. Leonardo includes tons of advanced features, such as, layers, transform tool, filters, special effects, and adjustment tools. Selection tools are also available to isolate certain functions and to create masking layers. Leonardo is so advanced that it rivals some desktop applications. For example, in additional to a wide range of editing controls, you can export your photos as jpg, png, or psd (Photoshop) formats. Superimpose X is the latest iteration of Leonardo, although the latter can still be downloaded from the App Store. Check out our early review on YouTube.
