Umano: The News Read to You in Style
I have long been fascinated by text-to-speech technology, in which news feeds are read to you in the form of a human voice - well, sort of. Apps like Winston are great options to have, but if you ever get tired of the mechanical voices, you can always go back to real voices. Umano offers real human voices by narrators who bring your news to life.
The iPhone can do many things, and its great to get the news in so many formats. However, reading the news on your iPhone is less enjoyable than on the iPad. Umano gives you the option to have the news read to you. You begin by choosing the subject areas that are provided by clicking on the list-view icon at the top left. A menu option will open with options to set up playlists, to personalize your choices, to select categories, and access the settings. Once you have selected a category, a list of articles will appear in list view. Each article has a plus sign along the right. You can select the plus sign at any time in order to add articles to your playlists. What's nice about playlists is that you can read articles or listen to articles off line, which is a very nice option. Once you select an article, a nice thumbnail image of the article appears at the top, with a like button at the top left and a view button at the top right. With the latter, you can view the original article, while still having the article read to you. Over time, the articles you like begin to reflect the type of articles you can see posted in the future.
Unfortunately, Umano is no longer available in the App Store.
