Apple News (iOS 12)
During WWDC 2018, Apple introduced Apple News for the Mac, along with a redesign for iOS. The iOS version still maintained the same content, but Apple chose to streamline the menus and simplify how users access information. In the current version, the bottom menu contains only three tabs: Today, Weekend Pursuits, and Channels. Today encompasses everything you would typically find in the "For You" section. Weekend Pursuits represents Apple's effort to provide curated content. Channels is where you will find most of the information that was formally provided in the bottom menu. At the very top of the channel page, you will find a search bar (formerly found on the bottom menu). By scrolling to the bottom of your channels, you will find your "History," "Saved Stories," and a button to "Discover Channels & Topics." With these changes, Apple chose to simply access so users can find information quickly and efficiently.
Apple News by Apple
During WWDC 2015, Apple introduced Apple News, a news application that now joins the ranks of Flipboard and News360. Apple dispensed with unnecessary graphic elements that interfere with the functionality of the app, focusing instead on typography, photography, and the familiar tile interface. "For You" is a section that brings you news based on your subscriptions and likes. "Favorites" consist of broader topics like ESPN, fashion, and fine art, which are defined by colored tiles. You can continue to refine your topics in the "Explore tab," and use the "Search" tab to locate even more articles. "Saved" is where you find all the articles you saved or gave a heart to; you will also find in this section your reading history. Apple also plans to release "Apple News Format" for publishers who want to publish their own content.
Flipboard was given the honors by Apple to be the best iPad app of 2010. Building on their success, Flipboard introduced an iPhone version in 2011. The title "Flipboard" alludes to the user interface that became its signature style: News articles are accessed by flipping tiles of information arranged in a grid format. Flipboard 2.0 introduced "My Magazines," a feature that lets users to set up curated magazines based on a topic or theme. Other users can subscribe to those magazines and receive updates when new posts are added. Flipboard 3.0 extended the option to add new magazines by choosing from over 30,000 topics. Flipboard 4.0 made it easy to set up new magazines and follow curated topics that coincide with your interest. On the phone, these new topics and magazines are accessed by swiping to the left, following themes you have selected along the top. This section can cover up to nine themes. Flipboard improves every year and continues to be the news reader ever designed for iOS.
