The Early Edition 2
by Glasshouse Apps
This review is a re-post from a description I wrote a few years ago. Glasshouse Apps just issued an update to fix some bugs, which indicates that the developers are still interested in keeping the app alive. Still one of the best news readers available. Due to some U.I. difficulties with sharing articles on social media, the internal mailing envelope that used to pop-up no longer exists. Functionality is always better than visuals that don't have a function, but I will miss this feature.
Early Edition 2 introduced a dramatic change from the original version Early Edition. The news reader still maintains the newspaper style layout, but the user interface is entirely different.
The app makes full use of swipe and pinching gestures to help navigate the pages. For example, you swipe from left to right to visit a new page, with the effect mirroring a page curl. You swipe down from the top to access various settings, featured feeds, additional feeds, brightness controls, and instructions for how to use the app. When you tap on an article, the page turns in 3D. If you tap on a photo, you can browse articles just by swiping through the images associated with each story. When accessing the featured feeds tab, you can pinch and twirl to return to the main page.

One of the best features is the storage bin. When you add a star to your favorite articles, you can retrieve them from a simulated cardboard box, which you can find by swiping up from the bottom. Early Edition also added the ability to save articles to Readability which has a separate bin of its own. The graphic design of this app is further enhanced by the share featured, in which articles shared to sites like Twitter and Facebook appear in the form of a manilla envelope. All the features work seamlessly together, with smooth animations that take you from one page to the next.
A brilliantly designed app that is in a class of its own. Despite Apple's move away from skeuomorphism, Early Edition 2 maintains these signature features.
